Afield - H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellowship Exhibition

Afield Exhibition by Laure Nolte, recipient of the 2024-2025 H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellowship at ��Ů��

With the support of the H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellowship, Afield presents an ongoing body of research into plant-based material cultures in Japan, Europe and North America. From kombu and silver grass in the mountains of Kyoto to bananas in Tenerife and tall grass prairie gama grass in Iowa, the plants in this exhibition weave material intelligence and traditional knowledge through the environmental and social networks that sustain them.

Fieldwork, photographs, and physical models are exhibited alongside in-process design work inspired by the people and places encountered throughout the fellowship—reimagining how matter and meaning are cultivated and cycled through the built environment.

The exhibition will be open from September 14, 2026, to September 18, 2026, in the ��Ů�� Medjuck exhibition space. Doors are open from 9-5 each day. All are welcome.

Join Laure Nolte on Thursday, September 17 at 6 p.m. in the Medjuck exhibition space for a gallery talk about the research, work, and travels that inspired AFIELD.

Laure Nolte is director of Fields, a design practice spanning from the material to the territorial. She is a designer, biomaterial researcher, and Visiting Assistant Professor at American University of Sharjah.

The DASA Lecture Series invites you to Off the Shelf, a lecture on the design process and the story of StudioAC by co-founders Andrew Hill and Jennifer Kudlats.

Hosted by the ��Ů�� Architecture Students Association (DASA), the lecture series brings leading architects, designers, and thinkers to the School of Architecture each term.

Off the Shelf considers architectural practice as an accumulation of ideas, experiences, references, and relationships that are continually revisited, tested, questioned, and refined through the act of design. Through an edited chronology of StudioAC's work, the lecture traces the emergence of a distinct design language while reflecting on the enduring influence of education, mentorship, and the studio's formative years at ��Ů��.

The lecture is free and open to all.

What if play were a key part of age-friendly community planning?

Join ��Ů��'s School of Planning on Monday, October 5, 2026, for a talk with author Maxwell Hartt, who will introduce ideas from his new book, Aging Playfully: Reimagining the Possibilities of Age-Friendly Community Planning.

Drawing on extensive research, Hartt explores how play can encourage physical activity, spark creativity, build social connection, combat loneliness and ageism, and expand how we plan for the health and well-being of aging populations.

��Ů�� the author: Maxwell Hartt is Director of the Population and Place Research Lab and Associate Professor of Geography and Planning at Queen's University. A registered professional planner and two-time Fulbright Scholar, his research focuses on how people shape places and how, in turn, places shape people. His latest book is Aging Playfully: Reimagining the Possibilities of Age-Friendly Community Planning.
