Why choose this program?

Civil engineering is one of the oldest and most versatile branches of the field, and we'll help you master it at Atlantic Canada's #1 engineering school. You'll learn hands-on in our labs, gain paid co-op experience, and study on Sexton Campus in downtown Halifax.

You'll learn to design, plan, build, and operate the infrastructure people rely on every day, like highways and bridges, marine structures, buildings, and water and wastewater systems.听

With one of the lowest student-to-faculty ratios in Canada, you'll learn directly from industry experts, supported by a wide range of lab experience.

You can add paid co-op work terms and shape your degree with one of four certificates: Structural, Geotechnical, Water Resources or Environmental Engineering. You'll also work alongside researchers in groups like the Centre for Water Resources Studies and the Intelligent Sensing and Innovative Structures Group.

Careers

Civil engineering is one of the most versatile paths to a career after graduation. As a graduate, you could work for consulting and contracting firms, construction companies, or local and federal government, designing structures, roads, foundations and water systems.

You might start in design, site or project roles and grow into senior design, project management or leadership. With 90+ co-op partners, students often receive full-time offers before they graduate, and co-op work terms count toward the experience needed to become a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).

Graduates can work on everything from buildings and bridges to transportation networks, water systems, and environmental projects.

What you will learn

Your first two years build a strong, common engineering foundation in math, science, design and engineering fundamentals, on Sexton Campus in Halifax or the Agricultural Campus in Truro. You'll move into civil engineering as you progress, going deeper into structures, soils, water and transportation, then focus with technical electives.

Labs, design, and co-op

Hands-on learning runs through the program.听Our labs give you practical experience in structures, soils, materials and water. Your final year centres on a design project emphasizing problem formulation, critical thinking, and system- and element-level design. Choose the co-op stream to add at least 12 months of paid work experience, starting in third year, with one of 90+ partner organizations.

Customize your degree

Tailor your BEng to your goals. Choose the four-year program or the five-year co-op stream, and add a certificate to specialize in the area that interests you most. Technical electives let you go deeper still.

You have the choice to add one of four certificates:听

  • Structural
  • Geotechnical
  • Water Resources
  • Environmental Engineering

Optional stream, at least 12 months of paid work terms, beginning in third year (can run up to 16 months).

You'll graduate ready to design, build and maintain the infrastructure our communities depend on, with the problem-solving skills to apply them in industry, government, and research.
